What's in season in May 2017, and other timely information:

May brings with it Spring and the ability to buy locally, especially in the deep South where fresh strawberries are available in Florida and Texas, followed by California. Cold weather crops, like spinach, some lettuces, peas, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, leeks and early onions being harvested in all but the colder regions. Many markets still have fresh winter squash, stored from last Autumn.

    Comments from a visitor on September 30, 2011: "Warehouse factory and store are in the same building. A nice wide open store where apples are sacked in 1/2 bushel sacks and smaller. Guess theyre called pecks and half-pecks. Everything is well marked and large enough you dont need reading glasses. Prices: 16/bushel 8/half-bushel Small apples: 6/half-bushel Seconds or culls: 7/bushel You have to get them from the factory, which has a loading dock that makes it easy to load your vehicle, as the cashiers are ill informed of the price. They will try to sell you the small apples at 6/half bushel. Everyone is very pleasant. Two cashiers. They do a brisk business. You can buy by 10 bushels at a time. Didnt ask about any quantity price break."
